About

Hey there!

If you’re not quite sure where you’re at, you’ve just reached the largest personal finance virtual dance party….

Okay, not quite. But that would be pretty neat.

In reality, you are here: Generation Y Retirement Account.

or Generation YRA for short.

My name’s Alyssa & I’m a 20 something gal who ever-so-randomly decided to kick it into high gear when it comes to personal finance.

How did this happen? Maybe it wasn’t so random (check out my first post No Diggity, No Debt for more of a play by play on how GenerationYRA.com got started).

After graduating from college in 2012, I realized that mainly every resource about personal finance was just way too dry. complicated. geared for older generations. deflating for the younger set. you name it. Well here I am, ready to change that.

GenerationYRA is a space that is positive, transparent, accessible, inviting, and gives a breakdown of this taboo topic we like to call personal finance. No more getting intimated by terms like mutual funds, 401(k), savings, and investing. Let’s talk money. I want you to feel empowered by it and make your financial game plan strong, as it should be.

Feel like you don’t quite have the time to learn about personal finance? This is the perfect scenario. Allow me to do the work, that way you can quickly learn in a few minutes or less by browsing my posts. Not to mention, I am totally fine with admitting my money mistakes. Go ahead and learn from my mistakes, that way you don’t have to find out the hard way!

While you’re here, you’ll find weekly posts geared towards:

  • Savings

  • Retirement

  • Investing

  • Overall thoughts on money

  • & so much more….and of course quite a bit of quirkiness (get to know me more, and this won’t be a surprise).

Oh, and by the way. You may be wondering: what makes you credible enough to be giving information on personal finance? Great call out! Although I have no certifications, degrees, special guru powers, and the like in relation to personal finance – I am a REAL individual who wants to breakdown all of this complicated jargon and find healthy approaches to handling money. What’s my ultimate goal? To build up a solid financial foundation, that way I can spend more time on the things I value with the people I love void of stress & worry.

If you feel like you’re starting from absolute beginner status, I am too. That’s why we’ve got this, and we can learn together. It’s challenging to learn from an advanced professional on this topic when intimidation is a huge factor. Why not learn from someone working her way from the ground up as well?

Thanks so incredibly much for stopping by, I’m thrilled you’re here!

  1. Hey Alyssa, I love what you are doing over here on your corner of the internet. I started a new Freedom Fighter interview series that is seriously under represented by Females in the community and would love to feature you on my site if you are up for it.

I could not find an email on your site so I thought this might be the best way to get in touch with you. If you are interested in participating I would love to connect.

You can send me an email at mrgenyfinanceguy@gmail.com

  2. Hi Alyssa,

I love the concept of this website! As a millennial myself, I am often concerned about how our generation will be affected in terms of retirement and long term financial stability. The down economy, low employment prospects and social security stability are all real factors in how our generation will be set up for success. Focusing on personal finances and ways to set yourself up for financial stability is key.

I have started my own personal finance blog that is focused on frugal living and being mindful finances called Lifeonadiscount.com. If you ever have any opportunities for guest posting or would be interested in sharing articles, please let me know!

  4. Hi Alyssa,

Let me ask you a blogger question. I notice that you always get lots of shares on your posts to twitter and elsewhere. I find that I rarely get many on mine. Do you have a secret?

    1. Hi SmallIvy,

That’s a great question! I’m not sure I really quite have a secret. I do spend a lot of time on Twitter & other social media sharing other’s content, as well as mine. I also participate in weekly Twitter chats which allows me to get introduced to other people. Beyond that, I’m not quite sure there is a secret – just the more active you are on social media, the more opportunities there are for people to share your content. 🙂
